Hi Z,rs, I now have a 1998 2.8 widebody to play with. Just peeled this lable off the nearside front strut. Can the age of the part be worked out from the numbers.

Those two numbers are simply BMW's and Sach's/Boge's part numbers.

Some brands will have a embossed stamp in the shock somewhere with the manuf. date (might be simple text or might be a clock type symbol showing mm/yy).

Those you have are the part numbers. To find the date of manufacture you need to clean down very thoroughly the underside of the spring pan. Stamped on the outer edge in very small numbers are the month and year. They are hard to spot so will need magnifying glass but they are there.

The fact it still has the bmw logo on the sachs sticker there is a high likelihood the shocks are original.
There are a lot of zeds especially low mileage examples are still driving around on 30 yr old shocks.

Stephen.

Thanks folks, theres about 170000 miles on this Z3, the spring seats are pretty pitted. Looks like ill be refurbing this area, banjo bushes are shot and i have a pair of control arms. Nothing ive not done before.
Ill have a look for the date stamp when they are out
